How is the Upcoming Semiconductor Plant in Gujarat Beneficial for Dholera?

A joint venture between the world’s largest mining company, Vedanta, and Taiwanese electronics manufacturer Hon Hai Technology Group (also known as Foxconn) has announced plans to build India’s first semiconductor plant in Gujarat. On September 13, the Gujarat government and the Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnav, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to this effect. The JV would gradually set up a semiconductor assembly and testing unit, a display production unit, and a semiconductor fabrication unit in the State.

How will Dholera SIR benefit from this project?

Gujarat is renowned for its industrial prowess, and electronics and gadget clusters have organically grown in Morbi, Jamnagar, and Mundra in Saurashtra as well as in Dholera and areas of South Gujarat. The production of digital clocks and other electronic devices like calculators has flourished in Morbi. Notably, according to statistics from the State Level Bankers’ Committee (SLBC), Gujarat has over 7 lakh registered MSMEs in the industrial and service sectors, with a combined credit offtake of more than Rs 1.2 lakh crore.

According to Anil Agarwal, the Chairman of the Vedanta Group, of the five to six States that offered incentives to build the plant, Gujarat demonstrated its commitment by making the necessary land available at a competitive price in addition to other incentives under the “Gujarat Semiconductor Policy,” which was introduced in July 2022.

Dholera is being constructed as a metropolis modelled after Silicon Valley as a result. A Semicon City will be established in the Dholera Special Investment Region (Dholera SIR), and all eligible projects will receive subsidies totaling 75% of the cost of the first 200 acres of land and 50% of the cost of additional land needed for fab projects, upstream/downstream, and other projects authorised under the ISM.
